Tigers win rain interrupted match by 8 wickets!

Tigers win rain interrupted match by 8 wickets!Lal Bahadur Stadium, March 22, 2008: The 16th match of the Edelweiss 20s Challenge featured the spirited Kolkata Tigers take on the Ahmedabad Rockets at the magnificent ICL facility, Lal Bahadur Stadium, Hyderabad. A win was crucial for both sides to avoid elimination at the league stage & both sides were expected to raise the performance bar in a keenly contested battle. The rain interrupted contest was finally won by the Kolkata Tigers by 8 wickets against the Ahmedabad Rockets. Andre Adams was declared the man of the match for his controlled seam bowling upfront.

The pitch had a nice grass cover and with overcast conditions it was expect to assist seam bowling up front. Damien Martyn won the toss and elected to bat. The Rockets opened with a new combination, Captain Martyn, taking the onus upon him to open the innings with the explosive Hinds. The move however was short-lived when the quick Hayward castled Martyn, sending him back to the Rockets dugout for only 4. Hinds too did not last long, miscuing a pull shot to reduce the Rockets scorecard to 14/2 in the 3rd over.

By the sixth over it was the young & impressive Parviz Aziz, who was battling it out for the Rockets, with 4 magnificent boundaries. At that stage, the Rockets were placed at 42/2. Just when his partnership with Goodwin was looking dangerous, Aziz’s little cameo came to an end in the 8th over for a well made 27, which included six wonderful shots to the boundary. McMillan brought on his experienced spin spearhead Upul Chandana, in the 9thover and he responded immediately with the big breakthrough of Goodwin’s wicket, reducing the Rockets scorecard to 58/4 at the end of the 9th over.

The 100 for the Rockets came up in the 15th over with Anshu Jain & Sriram setting the launch pad for onslaught in the final overs. They were working up a good partnership worth 66 runs off only 48 balls, till McMillan broke the partnership in form of Jain’s wicket in the 19th over.

The inexperienced lower middle order could not capitalize on the launch pad offered by the big partnership between Jain & Sriram and with the exception of a few audacious strokes from Sanjeev Martin in the last over; the Rockets finished their innings at 156/6 in their allotted 20 overs.

Rain played spoilsport in this crucial match & it was reduced to a 10 over run chase. The target was revised to 85 runs to get in 10 overs. The reply for the Tigers was opened by the dangerous Klusener & Subhomoy Das. Three cracking boundaries from the bat of Das, in Gillespie’s first over set the tone for the Tigers chase in the first over.

Das's onslaught came to an end at his personal score of 17, in the second over when the Rockets' quick Tamrakar destroyed his furniture with a perfect Yorker in the second over. At the half way mark of their innings, the Tigers were right on target at 45/1 needing 40 more runs off 30balls at 8 runs per over and 9 wickets in hand. Finally the Tigers got to the target with 8 balls to spare.

Brief scores: Ahmedabad Rockets 156/6 in 20overs (Sriram 52, Aziz 27, A Adams 1/19 (Rain Interruption -Revised target 85 runs in 10vers) lost by 8 Wickets to Kolkata Tigers 86/2 in 8.4 overs (Klusener 30, Das 17, Tamrakar1/14)
