Superstars outclass Mumbai champs with a 9 wicket victory !

23 March, 2008
G. Vignesh was declared the Man of the Match

Superstars outclass Mumbai champs with a 9 wicket victory !Panchkula, March 23, 2008: The 18th match of the Edelweiss 20s Challenge featured the defending champions Chennai Superstars take on Mumbai Champs, representing the home of Indian cricket, at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Sector-3, Panchkula. The formidable Superstars outplayed their opponents in every department of the game, beating the Mumbai Champs by 9 wickets. G. Vignesh was declared the Man of the Match.

In their pitch report both the experts; Thomson & Barry Richards predicted a flat & true bounce wicket, which was full of runs. Nathan Astle won the toss and elected to bat first on what looked like a batting paradise. The Champs opened their account in this do or die battle with Jayantha & the promising Dheeraj Jadhav.

It was a cautious start by both the openers and at the end of the 4th over the Champs were placed at 29 for no loss. It was again the "Bald assassin", Thiru Kumaran who struck the first blow for the Superstars by scalping Jayantha's wicket in the 5th over. By the end of the 7th over the Champs were placed at 44/1, with Patil & Jadav holding center stage.

At the half way mark of the 1st innings, the Superstars bowlers had kept a tight control over the Mumbai Champs' batting, putting them in a bit of a bother at 64/3. Just when the mainstay of the Champs batting lineup Raviraj Patil, was opening his shoulders, he was foxed by Syed in the 11th over for only 16.

At the end of the 16th over, the Champs score card read a dismal 102/5 with no momentum or partnerships whatsoever. Thiru Kumaran was at his deadly best, proving too good for the Mumbai batsmen & returning with another match winning spell of 4/14 for the Chennai Superstars. The Mumbai innings finally folded at 123 in19.5 overs.

In reply, the Superstars came out with their dynamic opening combination of Harvey & Vignesh, who got on with the onslaught in the second over with the impressive Vignesh taking 20 runs off the 2nd over from Kasprowicz, resulting in the Superstars off to a flier at 24 for no loss after two overs. The 50 for the Superstars came in the 4th over itself and included 8 fours & 3 sixes. The explosive Vignesh, brought about his fifty off only 17 balls, & was recorded as the fastest fifty in the Edelweiss 20s Challenge including 7 fours and three magnificent sixes.

Vignesh's magnificent innings finally came to an end in the 9th over, when he was caught on the boundary off Patil for a well made 61. By the 10th over, the Superstars were coasting along & had got to 102/1 at more than 10 runs per over, needing only 22 more runs off 60 balls with 9 wickets in hand. The Superstars finally achieved the modest target easily with 7 overs to spare.

Brief Scores: Mumbai Champs 123 all out in19.5 overs (Jadhav 28, Paul 21, T. Kumaran 4/14) lost by 9 wickets to Chennai Superstars 124/1 in 12.4 overs (Vignesh 61, Harvey 31, Patil 1/35)
