This has seen the pioneering effort of the ICL structure being replicated by cricketing boards across the global cricket fraternity, to propel its domestic cricket to the next level.
The T20 format today has been identified as the most viable format to gain the attention of cricket fans to domestic cricket. This has seen the pioneering effort of the ICL structure being replicated by cricketing boards across the global cricket fraternity, to propel its domestic cricket to the next level. Despite the fact that the Twenty20 Cup (T20 format tournament conducted by the E.C.B.) is in its sixth year of operations, the attention on the 2008 season has gained importance like never before. The primary reason for this has been initiatives like the pioneering ICL that has caught the imagination of the cricket fans to domestic T20 competitions.
The English County is the oldest league in the world and has played an important role in shaping careers of cricketers from across the globe for over five decades. In the Indian context too, players right from the days of Sr. Patudi, Gavaskar, Kapil to contemporary cricketers like Dinesh Mongia (Chandigarh Lions) & RP Singh have honed their skills on the county circuit. When the cricket spotlight shifted onto the 2008 county circuit; one of the startling facts was the rich representation of the ICL players across the 18 county teams.
Says Kiran More, Executive Board Member, Indian Cricket League (ICL), "Fifteen of the eighteen counties were represented by ICL players. Some of these players like Stuart Law (Lancashire, Chennai Superstars), Dale Benkenstein (Durham, Delhi Giants) Nicky Boje (Northamptonshire, Hyderabad Heroes) are at the helm of affairs as captains of their county sides. This is a reflection of talent-pool prowess of the ICL & the present day relevance of these magnificent players. It is not only their participation but performance in the 2008 season that has had the cricket fraternity take notice of the high cricket credentials possessed by these magnificent ICL players."
Performance Highlights of ICL stalwarts at the Twent20 Cup:
A. Wavell Hinds (Derbyshire, Ahmedabad Rockets) at 283 runs at an average of 35.37, Murray Goodwin (Sussex, Ahmedabad Rockets) at 345 runs at an average of 43.12 & Lou Vincent (Lancashire, Chandigarh Lions) at 267 runs at an average of 38.14 are amongst the leading run scorers at the Twenty20 cup.
B. Andrew Hall (Northamptonshire, Chandigarh Lions) at 18 wickets at 12.61 & Abdul Razzaq (Surrey, Hyderabad Heroes) at 15 wickets at 15.86 are amongst the top 10 leading wicket takers at the Twenty 20 cup.
C. All-rounders play a crucial role in the T20 format of the game. Azhar Mahmood at 239 runs at 39.83 and 13 wickets at 22.07(Lahore Badshahs & Kent)and Andrew Hall (18 wickets at 12.61 and 233 runs at 38.03) are amongst the leading contributors with both bat & ball for their respective counties.
Along with the international stalwarts, the ICL domestic talent too is making most of the English summer with some stupendous performances across the various leagues in the English domestic calendar. With their humongous talent & stupendous performance it is only a matter of time before talent scouts lap them up into the various county teams across England.
Performance Highlights of ICL domestic talent across the English leagues:
A. R Sathish (Capt ICL-India, Chennai Superstars), is the leading run scorer at the Ribblesdale league playing for the Whalley Cricket Club. His latest batting Avg, in 17 matches (16 innings) is 67.14 which include 4 centuries and 3 fifties.
B. Rajiv Kumar (Kolkata Tigers) is the leading run scorer at the North staffs & South Cheshire Cricket League, with 747 runs in 11 matches at an average of 106.7
C. Dheeraj Jadhav (Mumbai Champs) has been in a cracking form playing for the Horwich side in the Bolton League, Lancashire. His 164 N.O. against Bradshaw is the highest individual score in the league.
D. Vinay Devi Shetty (Hyderabad Heroes) plays for the Wath Cricket Club in the South Yorkshire League. In the fourteen games Vinay's batting average reads an impressive 75.67.
If cricket performance is the parameter for judging a player & leagues' credentials, then the performance of the ICL players in the domestic English competition proves that ICL and its players are right up there with the best in the world.
