ICC forms committee to decide on 'unofficial cricket' like ICL
Friday, 11 July , 2008
New Delhi, Jul 10 (PTI) In a significant development, the International Cricket Council has formed a top-level committee to resolve the long-pending issue of 'unauthorised cricket' like the Indian Cricket League.
"The ICC committee will discuss a whole range of issues including various legal aspects," an ICC spokesman told PTI today.
The committee was set up after the issue of the ICL's status came into focus when cricket authorities from India, England, Australia and South Africa met on the sidelines of the ICC meeting in Dubai to discuss the proposed Twenty20 Champions League.
The committee, formalised during the meeting in Dubai last week, includes BCCI's President-elect Shashank Manohar, BCCI vice-president and IPL chairman Lalit Modi, ECB chairman Giles Clarke, Cricket South Africa President Norman Arendse and ICC's senior counsel for business and commercial David Becker.
The committee would ensure that "whatever conclusion is reached is in the best interests of the game", the spokesman said.
National boards of all the Test-playing nations have refused to recognise the ICL and threatened to ban the cricketers playing in it.
However, that has not stopped the talent drain with the likes of New Zealand speedster Shane Bond still opting for the unofficial league. PTI
